The first thing that drew Harry's attention was the laughter.  The second was seeing a man who appeared to have a grey and white cloud for hair. The man seemed to be interested in everything he saw. He would look up at the clouds, or watch a dragonfly dance through the air down the street. Occasionally, he would greet someone with a "Morning, how are you?" But the ususal response was an uncomfortable smile and an air of wanting to be somewhere else.
"Mum, who is he?"
"Shh, Harry. He'll hear you."
"Is he a bad man, then?"
"Well, no. I have never heard anyone say he was bad."
"What's wrong with him, then?"
"He's always cheerful, and comes out with silly jokes."
This intrigued Harry so much that, when his mother was lost in conversation with a friend, he went over to the strange man and just, sort of stared at him.
The man stared back, then smiled, then laughed. "Hello, what can I do for you?"
"Who are you?"
"That's an easy one. They call me Wayland Cybersmith, or Waycyber. But (and don't tell anyone this), that isn't my real name."
"Is it true you're always cheerful?"
"No. Not always. Most of the time. Not when a friend is in pain, though. Then I just want to take the pain away."
"Why are you cheerful, then?"
"Why not? Life is good. I have all I need. The Sun is shining."
"Are you rich, then?"
"I don't have much money, but I have many friends. That makes me rich."
"Were you always like this?"
"No. Certainly not when I was your age. People didn't like me being me. They wanted me to be like them. I tried, but I just couldn't. So they bullied me.  There was one bully called Zarko who used to play tricks on me all the time. I was very unhappy."
"What happened?"
"I asked the King to help me. He sent Zarko away, then he reached into my heart and cut off the bit that was hurting. Then he put some of his own heart into me. I became someone new."
"Was that it?"
"That was the start. But I was used to my old heart and didn't know how to use the new one until a few years ago. The King himself taught me. Now my whole life is an adventure. Nothing gets me down. Nothing defeats me. I have everything I need. The King has done so much for me, I want to do whatever he wants me to. Sometimes that means getting into some dangerous situations, but I don't mind. If it's for Him, I don't care what I do or what happens to me. In any case, he always protects me."
"Why does the King do this for you?"
"Oh, not just me. He will do it for anyone who wants him to."
"Will he do it for me?"
"Of course. If you are willing to pay the price."
"You have to pay?"
"Not money. You have to be willing to put aside all your dreams, plans, and ambitions and become whatever the King wants you to be."
"That doesn't sound good."
"But it is. Because, what he wants you to be, is YOU! The real you!  He knows you better than you know yourself. He knows what will make you happy, what will make you strong. He will give you an amazing life, but you must let him have full control."
That was when Harry's mother saw them talking. She came over, grabbed Harry's arm, smiled and apologised to Wayland, then dragged Harry away.
