Very good. I know exactly what you mean. I have a friend who gripes and complains, often saying he "doesn't like" this or that. Yet he is a volunteer with homeless people, whose lives are far worse than his. He seems not to be able to empathise with these people. I have a number of minor conditions. I could give into them and shut myself away from life, but I don't let them beat me. I used to think "Why me?" Now I think "Why shouldn't it be me?" To complain about our fate suggests, in some ways, the someone else is more deserving than ourselves. If we all spent more time thinking about others, like the child in your poem, and less about ourselves, then we could make life better between us. |
