What does a gentleman wear to the evening ballet these days? To watch, that is, not to dance. I am thinking of a smart black jacket, black trousers, white shirt, no tie and very shiny shoes.

Sounds ok to me, not sure you will need the jacket. Doesn't need to be too formal, I've been to see symphony orchestras wearing jeans in the past. Smart casual. Depend on the venue too. If I was going to see an opera at Glyndebourne I would probably wear full evening wear.

Was there last night, at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall watching the mesmeric Moscow Ballet production of Swan Lake. There is something sensual and seductive about about the white swans' en pointe response to the prince. It was all over too soon. Very nice!
