'Tales form the Perilous Realm' is a must-have for any lover of the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. The book itself is a special no-expense-spared, limited availability compilation of his less well known stories:
    Farmer Giles of Ham
    The Adventures of Tom Bombadil
    Smith of Wootton Major
    Leaf by Niggle
As for the stories themselves, I can say with hand on heart that they are all totally magical! Each one is as different one from another as 'The Hobbit' is from 'Lord of the Rings'. In fact, it is almost uncanny how Tolkien manages to remove every trace of himself from every tale he tells; it is only after arriving at the last full stop that you realise you have been treated to a unique adventure by a genuine master of the story-tellers craft.

The Introduction is by acclaimed Tolkien scholar and writer Tom Shippey. The Appendix includes the essay 'On Fairy-stories' and an Afterword by award-winning artist Alan Lee, who created the fifty marvelous illustrations for this finely crafted edition. There is even an exclusive, pull-out colour frontispiece by Alan Lee featuring a fearsome dragon on a mountain peak.

The hard-bound book is of traditional construction with quarter-binding and end boards which bear a unique motif created by Alan Lee stamped in red, gold and silver foil and Tolkien's personal logo in gold. Superior quality, almost card-weight paper is used for the pages and a green silk ribbon marker is the finishing touch. The volume comes in a matching slip case bearing that unique motif.

This de luxe edition normally sells for £60.00 but can currently be found on Amazon for around £30.00 and I am delighted with my purchase.
